Two people. Ten chances. One unforgettable love story.
Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn’t exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there’s a moment of pure magic…and then her bus drives away.
Certain they’re fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn’t find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they “reunite” at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It’s Jack, the man from the bus. It would be.
What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness.
It’s a wonder everyone who uses public transport in winter doesn’t keel over and die of germ overload.
I received One Day In December by Josie Silver from Penguin Random House UK and I was so excited about it. I looove holiday reads and this one didn’t disappoint me.
The first sentence made me laugh out loud which is always a good sign. I loved the humor and the truth in her words and it was just a perfect start to this amazing love story.
The scene where Laurie meets her boy from the bus stop is written so perfectly. You will get the feeling as if you are sitting next to her, living through this moment with her. Josie Silver did a great job there and from that moment on I KNEW I will love this book. Laurie has to go through many hard times over the years and the way the author describes them, you will really feel with her. You want to hold her and tell her that everything will be fine. Gladly she has her best friend Sarah who is so so great. She has such a lovable, strong personality and plays an important role in the book, in my opinion.
I love that the story is told from two different perspectives. Usually I am not a big fan of it but as every other thing, it was done perfectly here. It’s interesting to look into the boy-from-the-bus-stop’s head aka Jack.
You know what I loved about the characters? They seemed so real. Jack is a great guy but he isn’t perfect. Same with Laurie. They are both so real and so easy to love. Sometimes book characters are just too perfect. They look perfect, have a perfect life and everything seems to fall into their hands. Laurie tries so hard to make everything right and I loved how she changed over the years. She has grown up so much and all her New Year’s resolution lists made me want to make my own ones right away as well. I am really inspired right now!
I got asked if the book is too cheesy and I get why people might ask this question. The synopsis sounds very cheesy with the bus stop situation BUT like I said before, the characters are way to realistic to be cheesy. So, don’t worry 😉
People, go pick up this book. Read it. I promise you, you’ll love it. It’s an amazing, true love story and One Day In December will get you into the holiday mood, I am sure. Oh, I am in love with this book!
