this is the recipe of life
said my mother
as she held me in her arms as i wept
think of those flowers you plant
in the garden each year
they will teach you
that people too
must wilt
fall
root
rise
in order to bloom
The Sun and her Flowers: FIRST SENTENCE
bees came for honey
flowers giggled as they
undressed themselves
for the taking
the sun smiled
– the second birth
The Sun and her Flowers: MY OPINION
As some of you might know, I didn’t really enjoy Rupi Kaur‘s first poetry collection Milk and Honey. I couldn’t relate to the poems and I think my expectations were just too high. When I am back home, I will probably give it another try because I also think that I wasn’t really ready for poetry since it was my first poetry book.
I liked The Sun And Her Flowers way more.
First of all, I liked that the book is divided in five chapters: Wilting, Falling, Rooting, Rising and Blooming. I adore flowers and couldn’t live without them and I was excited to see and read how Rupi Kaur would work with them in her poems.
And, of course, she did amazing. I highlighted so so so many poems. Poems I could relate to, poems which made me think, poems which made me realize how important it is to love yourself first. I don’t want to tell too much about the content because I want you all to read and interpret the chapters and poems by yourself but I liked that it was less about heartache, or at least, in another way than Milk and Honey.
I also really enjoyed the immigration part because it was a fresh topic. Sometimes heart breaking, sometimes eye-opening. And I could relate to it being in another country at the moment.
Last but not least I want to talk about the illustrations. They are, as always, out of this world. I love the simplicity, the clearness and how they emphasize Rupi Kaur‘s words.
The Sun and her Flowers: SUMMARY
All in all, Rupi Kaur isn’t just a great illustrator, she is also an amazing writer. The Sun And Her Flowers will open your eyes with her words, she will make you cry and smile and you will learn so much about yourself.
So, go get this book, my dearest friends. You will not regret it 🙂

Great review Franzi! I can only second everything you said. It was definitely better than Milk & Honey, and the poems are so encouraging and uplifting that I can’t wait to read them again ♥
