Book Review: A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

I’ve heard a lot about A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and it has always been on my tbr list.

And guys, I am so happy I’ve read it. So happy.

This book is unreal. It’s fantastic. It’s heart wrecking. It’s beautiful and sad. For sure I would find a lot more adverbs which would describe the book perfectly but that’s beyond the point.

When I started reading A Monster Calls I knew that it will be completely different to the books I’ve read before. You know, my genre has always been YA. Cheesy love stories with happy endings. I didn’t really enjoy reading books with a main character who was younger than me. I don’t know why. Nevertheless, I wanted to read the book to understand the hype around it.

Since the first page Patrick Ness had my attention. His writing style is unreal. He was definitely meant to be a storyteller.

His characters are so real. Even though Conor is only thirteen years old, he is so strong and tough and he knows and understands a lot more than all the others expect. For the reader it’s clear what’s going on and there is that desire to just be honest with Conor. To just be real with him and tell the other characters in the book to finally tell him.

Although he is so young, he is more of an adult than lots of other 16, 17, 18 main characters from other books.

And then the monster. The idea of creating a monster is fascinating. I loved the monster so much.  I loved how he treated Conor. How honest and caring he was with him. How helpful he was. How he became his friend.

I just can’t get over the idea. The idea of creating a monster which is in almost everyone of us. It’s breathtaking.

And yes. The book made me cry. It wrecked my heart. But I felt good at the end. I was feeling like Conor. Relieved.

What can I say? As you might have noticed, I loved this book so much and it will always have a place in my heart and I will for sure read it again and look at the gorgeous pictures.

A Monster Calls is a book which will wreck your heart, which will make you sad and angry but it will also show you that, even if you do not believe in it, you’re never alone. You’ll always have someone at your side who cares and who tries to make you feel better.

You’ll never be alone.
