Book Review: It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

As I sit here with one foot on either side of the ledge, looking down from twelve stories above the streets of Boston, I can’t help but think about suicide.

My Opinion: It Ends With Us

I don’t know where to start. I am still in the aftermath of feelings It Ends With Us has caused in me. I have problems to organize my thoughts and I don’t know what to think about this book. Everything is so confusing.

When I started reading It Ends With Us two days ago I already knew what it was about. I know, I am so bad but I flipped a lot through the pages before I picked up this books and so, I knew the rough storyline. With this knowledge I didn’t really want to read it. Like, of course I wanted but not now. I wanted to be kind of strong enough and just wasn’t in the mood for reading a sad story. I knew It Ends With Us would hurt me and so it did.

Colleen Hoover has the great ability to create amazing encounters of the main characters. It was the same in It Ends With Us. Lily wants a place for herself after the funeral of her father to think about everything in silence. Ryle wants the same. They meet on the rooftop of his apartment.

When Ryle first appeared I immediately fell in love with him. He was funny and said exactly what he was thinking. I liked their thing with the naked truths and how they interacted with each other. How he was so caring about Lily and how his complete view of life changes with him meeting Lily.

Ryle is amazing in so many ways. He’s compassionate. He’s caring. He’s smart. He’s charismatic. He’s driven.

As far as I got into the story my feelings about Ryle got mixed up. I don’t think he’s a bad person and I feel so sorry for him for what happened in his past. Nevertheless I felt sick a lot while reading.

There is no such thing as bad people. We’re all just people who sometimes do bad things.

At this point I have to admit how incredible strong and though Lily is. She was a character I liked from the very beginning. As she was sitting lonely on the rooftop. As she first talked with Ryle. As she made her dream come true. I admire her. And I totally understand her feelings and behavior toward Ryle. I don’t know how I would have reacted when I would have been in her situation. I don’t know if I would have been this though.

What I loved a lot about It Ends With Us was the confusion. Sounds probably stupid because nobody likes to be confused but I think that’s exactly how Lily must have felt during all this time. I didn’t know what to think, what to feel and to be honest this feeling lasted until the very end. A few sentences before, I said that I totally understand Lily’s feelings and her behavior. This is true. I do but I don’t know if I would have acted like she did. I just don’t know. And probably nobody knows until their in the exact same situation.

It stops here. With you and me. It ends with us.

Summary

It Ends With Us is such an important book and I am glad I finally decided to read it (Thank you, my lovely Lea!). Everybody who wants to read It Ends With Us has to be aware that it will make you feel maybe hurt and sad but there are definitely scenes that will make you smile and laugh and role your eyes while smiling. You will love Allysa and Marshall! Just saying.

I admire Colleen Hoover for writing this book. For writing about a topic that is so difficult to talk about. Definitely don’t read the ‘Note from the author’ before finishing the book. But read it. Just read the book.
