Book Review: When We Collided by Emery Lord

When We Collided: SYNOPSIS

We are seventeen and shattered and still dancing. We have messy, throbbing hearts, and we are stronger than anyone could ever know…

Jonah never thought a girl like Vivi would come along.

Vivi didn’t know Jonah would light up her world.

Neither of them expected a summer like this…a summer that would rewrite their futures.

In an unflinching story about new love, old wounds, and forces beyond our control, two teens find that when you collide with the right person at just the right time, it will change you forever.

When We Collided: FIRST SENTENCE

I knew I was in love with Verona Cove on the first day, but I waited until the seventh day to commit.

WHEN WE COLLIDED: MY OPINION

When We Collided by Emery Lord was the first book I’ve bought here in Canada. I picked it up because I wanted to read a cute, but not too cheesy love story.

But, oh well, When We Collided wasn’t that for me at all.

First of all you have to know that the story is told by Vivi and Jonah. The two main characters. It’s a pretty important point for me, because usually I prefer one point of view but in this case I was glad the story wasn’t just told by Vivi.

I had to read the first chapter twice to understand the situation. From the beginning on I didn’t really like the main character Vivi. She was too much for me. The way she behaved, how she talked about herself and her surrounding. Just everything. As the story goes on you get little hints that something has to be wrong and at one point you will understand her behavior but I still didn’t like how it came across, how the author worked with it.

I couldn’t really relate with Vivi and being able to relate to the main character is a very important point for me.

My first thought about Noah was that he is cute. He is and he seems way older than sixteen. He has to take over a lot of responsibilities and I liked how he behaved and cared for his siblings. How he tried to keep his family together. Sometimes though his  character was not fully developed, for my taste. He seemed to unreal.

The love connection between Vivi and Jonah was not my favorite as well. Mostly because of Vivi. There was too less impact from Vivi’s side. She under appreciated his love and even though he was very open to her and told her how he feels, she didn’t open up for him. I wasn’t convinced of her love to Jonah at all.

What I did like about When We Collided was that it was an easy and fast read even though I struggled at some points to keep reading just because I didn’t enjoy it.

I also liked the little town, called Verona Cove the story took part and the summer feeling it brought across. I needed that during those cold winter days.

When We Collided: SUMMARY

All in all I am still giving When We Collided by Emery Lord three out of five stars because it was an easy read and I still felt like finishing it. The characters had their cute moments but for my taste the story and its characters weren’t fully developed and the main negative point was that I didn’t like the main character Vivi.

I’ve never read a book by Emery Lord, and I’m honestly not sure if I even want to!

Okay I want to encourage you with Emery Lord bc I’ve read a few of her books that are so great. this is by far the worst one! I TOTALLY agree about Vivi. She is the WORST, not likeable and in the end I didn’t even want her to end up with Jonah bc he’s too good for her! I really enjoyed the Start of Me and You as well as The Names They Gave Us (both totally different from When We Collide, and also both totally different from each other as well!) Don’t give up on Emery yet!
