Running Q&A

FINALLY, my running Q&A. I am not an expert. I am talking about my own experience and not every piece of advice will work for everyone. Just keep that in mind.

Without further ado, let’s answer some questions:

How to breathe in the right way?

Breathing in the right way is so important. I noticed that when I am out of my breathing rhythm, running becomes harder and I tend to get stitches a lot easier. Generally it is important that you breathe out longer than you breathe in if that makes sense. Try to get into a rhythm and stick with it throughout the whole run.

Also, in the beginning it might be better to run by yourself, so you don’t have to talk to anyone and can fully concentrate on your breathing

Do you prefer to run alone or with somebody?

For shorter runs I like having someone with me and it is always saver too. What I noticed though is that I get distracted a lot when someone else is running with me and then I can’t fully concentrate on my breathing.

So, shorter runs, yes partner, longer runs, no partner.

What are your goals for the year?

The furthest I’ve run so far was 13km and after that, I couldn’t run for a few days because my knee was hurting so much. So, my goal for this year is to work on my knee problems and figure out where they are coming from…and then when I figured that out I would love to run a half marathon (21km).

Best recommendations for recovery?

Stretching! So important and I am still trying to get better at it. Also, please, please, please let your body recover. I made this mistake a few times where I would run with my knee hurting and obviously that just made it worse. Wait with your next run until the pain goes fully away and immediately stop when you feel it coming back.

Any advice on how to get started?

I wrote a whole blog post about how to start running a little while ago. Will link it here 🙂

My main advice: start slow. When I tried to get back into running about 1,5 years ago (didn’t run consistently then) I started with seven minutes, then 15 minutes and then 20 minutes. Don’t put pressure on yourself and remember that you are just starting out. No one expects anything from you. Take it slow, listen to your body and just enjoy it 🙂

What’s your favorite running shoe?

I bought my first running shoes at the end of last year. I decided to get a pair of Brooks and really like them! I would recommend doing a running analysis (that’s what I did). That way you get to know your running style and which shoes would be the perfect fit. Also, don’t forget to get running socks. They are lifesavers and I couldn’t run without them anymore.

Do you stretch before running?

I do! Especially since my knee started hurting again. Just a little fast stretch to get my legs warmed up and it really helps with knee pain. Stretching afterward is important too, by the way. It is also a lot more fun because your body is already warmed up.

I would also recommend walking a bit before you start to run. That way your body gets warmed up and you are not going from 0 to 100.

Running after or before breakfast?

If I plan on running in the morning, I just drink a cup of coffee and then go. That works best for me and allows me to go for an early run. If I go after my breakfast I usually wait at least an hour but I noticed that my performance is not as good.

It’s so important to find out what works for you and your body!

…and that’s a wrap. I hope this Q&A was helpful and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask 🙂

Loved that Q&A! ♡ I also go running regularly (not for very long runs but it’s still okay I guess 😅) and I like the fact that one can really see a difference when doing that a few times a week. I also go running before breakfast but I still need to drink a cup of tea or something to be fully awake, haha.
